This is a fun pattern that is made by making rows with single crochets and slip stitches. In this variation, you simply work under both loops. It is very important to work super loose in the rounds with the slip stitches, otherwise it is very difficult to get your hook under the 2 loops in the next row.
Making single crochets, slip stitches, and working in the setup, is shown extensively in the videos of the crochet course.

Tips
Don’t make turning chains for the rows with the single crochets. This gives a nice edge.
Work super loosely in the row with the slip stitches!
